Boise State not invited to join Mountain West Conference

In a surprise development, the Mountain West Conference will conclude its annual summer meetings today without inviting Boise State to join the conference, a spokesman said.

Associate commissioner Javan Hedlund said the conference’s president will “continue to study” expansion but that no offer will be forthcoming to the two-time defending Western Athletic Conference football champion today. Commissioner Craig Thompson told the media there was no vote taken.

The meetings in Jackson Hole, Wyo. had been scheduled to wind up tomorrow but with a lack of action on expansion there was no further need for the nine presidents to meet, Hedlund said.

Speculation had been that the Broncos would be invited to become the 10th member of the conference today. Boise State has until July 1st to inform the WAC of its plans to leave if it wants to compete in the MWC in the 2011 school year.

Hedlund did not rule out expansion in coming weeks but said the presidents wanted to continue to assess the situation.

Speculation is the MWC is waiting to see what might develop with the Big 12 Conference, where rumors of a tie-up with the Pac-10 are rampant.
