Churches around isle hold free musical performances

Music lovers can find free entertainment every weekend this month as churches become concert halls where movie themes, Hawaiian songs and folk music are on the bill.

» Folk songs from around the world and a full orchestral version of Sesame Street’s "Rubber Ducky" will be heard at 7 p.m. tonight at the Windward Choral Society’s spring concert. Orchestra members from the Oahu Civic Orchestra, Hawaii Pacific University Chamber Orchestra and Marine Forces Pacific Band will join the 70-voice chorale in the performance at Windward United Church of Christ, 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kailua.

» Music from Broadway shows and movies will be spotlighted in free concerts next weekend at the Honolulu Tabernacle, 1560 S. Beretania St., presented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Honolulu Hawaii Stake. The programs at 7 p.m. Friday and next Saturday will feature the Honolulu Hawaii Stake Orchestra and adult and child choirs, led by Craig Young, Punahou School orchestra director. Free parking is available in the parking structure adjacent to the church.

» The Royal Hawaiian Band will present Hawaiian music and classic and popular songs in a June 26 concert at United Church of Christ, 467 N. Judd St. The musical offering is part of the congregation’s 95th-anniversary celebration. Free parking will be available at nearby Judd Street churches.

Bible Institute will begin summer classes next week

The Bible Institute of Hawaii will begin its summer session of classes and seminars next week.

Most classes are held in the evening at various churches in Honolulu. Class fees range from $20 to $40.

A two-day seminar on "Wise Words from a Wise Man: Studies in the Book of Proverbs" will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nuuanu Ave. The workshop will continue from 8:30 a.m. to noon next Saturday. Phillip M. Johnson, former Multnomah Biblical Seminary professor, is the instructor.

Johnson will also lead a seminar on "The Epistles of Peter" June 25 and 26.

Other seminars include a "Half Day Retreat with Jesus" at Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe on July 17, led by Lisa Orimoto.

A course on "Relationships, a Mess Worth Making" will be taught by the Rev. Todd Capen on Wednesdays beginning July 7. The four-week class will meet at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Kailua.

Other classes will include a study of the book of Nahum, an exploration of the prophecy in the book of Revelations and a look at the gospel character Zephaniah.
