Man who robbed Waikiki bank sought

Police are looking for a man who robbed a bank in Waikiki on Friday.

The man entered the Waikiki branch of First Hawaiian Bank at 4:13 p.m., approached the teller and handed her a demand note, police said. He fled on foot in an unknown direction, police said.

The man is described as between 20 and 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds and wearing a New York Yankees blue-and-white baseball cap, dark striped polo shirt, dark long denim pants and sunglasses.

Big Island woman faces multiple charges

Big Island police arrested a 35-year-old Honokaa woman who allegedly threatened, assaulted with a knife and kidnapped a 21-year-old Honaunau woman Sunday night.

Police said the younger woman was visiting a male friend’s house in Captain Cook at about 7:15 p.m. when his ex-girlfriend allegedly threatened her, then allegedly used a knife to cut off some of her hair and cut her neck and chest. Police said the cuts did not require treatment.

The suspect ordered the 21-year-old to get into a car with her and two other women. The 21-year-old was driven to a gas station in the Kaloko industrial area and another one in Waimea.

At the Waimea gas station, the woman got out of the car and called 911.

Police arrested the 35-year-old woman later that night on suspicion of kidnapping, terroristic threatening and assault.

Moiliili man arrested in threat with knife

Police arrested a 50-year-old Moiliili man who allegedly threatened his 43-year-old neighbor with a knife.

Police said the suspect stepped into the victim’s apartment near Isenberg Street and threatened his neighbor with a knife.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Auto repair earns 2 Maui students trip

Two Maui High School students will represent Hawaii at the 2010 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Competition today at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.

Lewis Drapete and Bryson Higa qualified for the national car-repair competition at the state championship in April.

The competition, which will be chronicled online in real time via Facebook and Twitter, pits the Hawaii students against 49 other state teams in a hands-on competition to repair a rigged 2010 Ford Flex sport utility vehicle. The winner will be selected based on repair time and scores on a written mechanical exam.

Competitors will share $11.5 million in scholarships and prizes as well as the chance to shadow the Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR race team later this summer.

Maui High School has finished in the top 10 in the state competition for the past nine consecutive years and won national titles in 1995 and 2000. This year’s team is being overseen by instructor Shannon Rowe, who took second place at the 1996 national competition.

Brush fire on Maui finally out

It took almost a week to put out the brush fire at Maalaea, reportedly the largest ever on Maui.

The fire started June 7 and was extinguished at 12:30 p.m. yesterday, Maui firefighters said.

The brush fire burned an estimated 6,200 acres but did not damage any structures.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Dozens of people were evacuated, and Honoapiilani Highway was closed temporarily.
