The state Parks Division has temporarily suspended issuing new camping permits for Polihale State Park on Kauai after the main water line broke last night, leaving no water to operate toilets or showers.

The park remains open, but the Parks Division is notifying persons with camping permits for this weekend of the outage.

The water line break caused the park well to run dry, but parks staff were able to stop the pump in time to prevent it from being damaged.

State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials said they hope the well will have replenished itself by Monday so the repair crew can locate the leak and make repairs.

Two portable toilets were delivered to the park today and two more will arrive tomorrow.

The public is asked not to use the comfort stations which do not have water to operate them.

Three commercial kayak companies that operate from Polihale have been notified and they will provide water for their customers and allow them to stop at a nearby county park to use the restrooms there.
