WAILUKU>> Maui is set to become the last county in Hawaii to ban drivers from using cell phones without a hands-free device.
Mayor Charmaine Tavares is expected to sign into law a bill, passed unanimously Friday by the Maui County Council, mandating the new rules.
Motorists caught driving while chatting or texting would face fines up to $100 for a first time offense. Subsequent citations could mean fines of $250 or more.
Two-way radios would still be able to be used between drivers with commercial licenses and operators of fleet vehicles under the new plan.
Teenagers or anyone who holds an instructional permit cannot use phones at all while driving.
