Fourth of July celebration Sunday at Maunalua Bay

The Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Foundation is staging its third annual Fourth of July celebration Sunday at Maunalua Bay from 1 to 9 p.m.

The organization was formed by volunteers in late 2007 to bring the community together with a fireworks show. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds go toward scholarships for Hawaii students. Michelle Ige and Emily Valenzuela of Kalani High School and Lilyan Koseki of Kaiser High School each received $2,000 scholarships this year.

Games, entertainment and activities will include outrigger canoe rides, ukulele virtuosos Jake Shimabukuro and a mini golf course. The fireworks show will begin at 8 p.m. from a barge in Maunalua Bay.

Organizers will provide free shuttles from parking sites at Kaiser High, Koko Head Elementary and Hahaione Elementary.

The event is funded through corporate sponsors such as BluWater Grill,CQ Outback Steakhouse, Pacific International Realty and Quality Construction.
