Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares plans to sign into law a bill that would prohibit the use of cell phones and other handheld electronic devices while driving.
Tavares is expected to sign the bill on Tuesday.
The Maui Police Department issued a statement today warning drivers they will stop and issue citations to drivers who violate the new law.
Most drivers will be allowed to use “hands free” communications devices while driving.
Teenagers and anyone holding an instructional permit won’t be allowed to use any type of electronic device while driving.
Maui is the last county in the state to impose the ban.
