The state plans to close the entrance channels for Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor and Maunalua Bay on Oahu on Sunday evening as a safety precaution due to Independence Day fireworks displays.

Department of Land and Natural Resource officers will also enforce a safety zone around the fireworks barge in Kailua Bay.

All vessels must stay 300 yards away from any spot where fireworks are being set off over the water.

To discourage fireworks use, the state will close two Honolulu parks early Sunday: Puu Ualakaa State Park off Round Top Drive and Waahila Ridge State Park in St. Louis Heights.

The department is reminding people that consuming alcohol and setting off fireworks is illegal in all state parks, forest reserves and small boat harbors.
