Two people and three dogs are homeless, but safe today after a fire caused $700,00 damage to their Wailua Homesteads home last night, a Kauai county spokeswoman said.

The fire was reported at 5:38 p.m.; brought under control a half-hour later; and extinguished at 6:45 p.m., the fire department reported.

The fire broke out in an upstairs studio apartment and spread downstairs to the two-bedroom home on Royal Dr. The owner of the home, her brother and their pets escaped without injury after neighbors alterted them about the fire. They were also able to move a car and motorcycle out of harm’s way.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross and neighbors are providing assistance to the victims.
