Lost wallet leads to theft suspect

A 36-year-old man who was charged Tuesday with threatening another man’s dog for cash was located because he dropped his wallet at the scene, court documents said.

Police said Martin P. Silva was charged with second-degree theft and second-degree extortion. His bail was set at $11,000.

Silva allegedly threatened the 46-year-old victim about 12:35 a.m. Feb. 19.

According to court documents, Silva befriended the victim, who was walking his dog on Seaside Avenue in Waikiki.

He picked up the man’s dog, a 9-pound dachshund named Monster-Bug, and placed his hand around the dog’s neck, causing it to yelp. He threatened to kill the dog if the man didn’t give him money, according to the documents.

Fearing for his dog’s safety, the man took out $200 from his wallet and threw it on the ground.

Silva threw the pooch at the man, who caught it, and stooped to pick up the cash, unknowingly dropping his wallet, which held his picture ID.

After Silva fled, the victim brought the wallet to police and identified Silva as the man in the ID. He was arrested after someone checked and found he was being held at the Halawa Correctional Facility.

Man arrested in threatening case

Police arrested a 22-year-old man who allegedly threatened to shoot another man in a possible love triangle in Wahiawa.

The suspect had accused the 21-year-old man of the affair with the suspect’s girlfriend for the past several weeks and threatened to shoot him several times, police said.

The suspect was stopped by officers while heading to the victim’s home about 8:30 p.m., police said. The man was booked on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Credit card thief sought on Big Island

Big Island police are asking for help in identifying a woman suspected of using a stolen credit card.

The victim reported that someone was withdrawing funds from her bank account in Hilo without authorization in May, police said.

During the investigation, officers viewed surveillance video depicting a woman using an automated teller machine to make unauthorized withdrawals. She appeared to be wearing a light blue long-sleeved top, khaki pants and sunglasses and was carrying a tan shoulder bag.

Fired deputy prosecutor files lawsuit

WAILUKU » A fired Maui County deputy prosecutor has filed a federal lawsuit that accuses her former department of discrimination, retaliation and sexual harassment.

Marie Kosegarten’s suit names the department, Maui Prosecutor Benjamin Acob and Deputy Prosecutor Timothy Tate.

The lawsuit says Kosegarten was "threatened and tormented with discipline, demotions and other negative consequences" after Acob became prosecuting attorney in January 2007 until she was fired in June 2009.
