HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A rising senior football standout at Humboldt High School has died after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool.

The Jackson Sun reported that Kane Young, a running back and defensive end for the team, died Thursday at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. He was pulled from a pool in Humboldt on Wednesday night and another team member, certified in CPR, administered aid until an ambulance arrived.

Humboldt coach Dan Bland said Young was the “heart and soul” of the team.

Humboldt Police Assistant Chief Bill Baker said the death appears to be accidental.

Young’s death came less than two weeks before the start of the new school year and just days before fall football practice will begin.
