Maui police arrest suspect in October shooting death
After a months-long search, Maui police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a Kaupo man.
The Maui Police Department announced this afternoon that Robert J. Chiarizia was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder on the strength of a grand jury indictment.
He is accused of shooting Alan Vegas, 45, on Oct. 18.
Vegas was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Members of the police special response team arrested Chiarizia about 5:50 a.m. “without incident” at a camp site in Kaupo, a remote shoreline area south of Haleakala, the statement said.
“Chiarizia had been eluding police for several months,” the statement said.
