Kolten Wong‘s breakout summer in the Cape Cod League has come to an end.

Hawaii’s junior-to-be second baseman has been bothered by a nagging thumb injury and decided to cut his summer short by two weeks.

Wong’s last game with the Orleans Firebirds was July 30, when he went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate finished the season hitting .341, more than 60 points higher than anyone else on the team, with three home runs, 11 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.

Wong has stayed in touch throughout the summer with Rainbows coach Mike Trapasso, who is currently in Las Vegas for the Western Athletic Conference baseball coaches meetings.

"He had an X-ray on it and it was negative, but it’s something that has been bothering him for the last two or three weeks," Trapasso said. "It was really tender to the point of getting numb and with four or five games left, it got to the point where he could do more damage to it, so he shut it down."

Wong’s impressive stint in the Cape Cod League culminated with a starting spot in the league’s All-Star game at Fenway Park last Wednesday. MLB Network baseball analyst Peter Gammons was quoted in an interview comparing Wong to a young Carlos Baerga.

Balocka signs overseas

Former University of Hawaii men’s basketball player Petras Balocka signed a two-year deal with BC Lietuvos Rytas, a pro club team that competes in the Lithuanian Basketball League, the Baltic Basketball League, and the Euroleague.

The team is based in Balocka’s hometown of Vilnius, Lithuania. Lietuvos Rytas captured the Lithuanian Basketball League championship this past season, finished runner-up in the Baltic League and took fifth place in Group B of the Euroleague.

This past season the 6-foot-8 power forward had 20 points and a career-high 20 rebounds against Lamar, becoming just the third player in program history and first in 36 years to have a 20-20 performance.
