Island Edge is looking for designers who want to be the first "Island Edge Design Star."

The island-wear boutique, a new retail concept by Pomare Ltd., celebrated its grand opening at Ala Moana Center last week, showcasing racks devoted to mainland and Hawaii brands, with the eventual aim of promoting more local designers.

"The Island Edge Design Star" competition was conceived to help one winning designer manufacture his or her own line, to be carried at Island Edge.

The contest is open to Hawaii residents 18 and older. Fill out a registration form available at www.islandedgehawaii.com or pick one up at the store. Submit the form, as well as one wearable garment (no swimsuits or accessories) and design sketches, fabric swatches and style boards demonstrating concept development to Pomare Ltd., Merchandising Department, 700 N. Nimitz Highway, Honolulu, HI 96817. Entries may be mailed or hand-delivered, with mailed entries postmarked by Oct. 8.

Garments for women need to be size 4 to 6, and for men, size large. Garments will be returned by request only at the contestant’s expense.

The winner will receive $2,000, plus $500 to donate to a local charity of their choice, have naming rights for the label and royalties from all sales. There will be honorable mentions for one men’s and women’s clothing line, with $1,500 awarded to each.

Judges from Island Edge and the fashion community will review the entries to select the finalists, who may be required to meet and discuss their work with the executive team. For more details, visit the store, or inquire at info@islandedgehawaii.com.

The designs and sketches will be on view in the store for one month to allow the public to cast ballots and send text messages for their favorite outfit. Entries not selected will remain the sole property of each registrant.

Over the next few months, Island Edge will host trunk shows featuring various designers

Among local lines carried are those of Rona Bennett and Lan Chung of Fighting Eel, Pia Kuhlemann of Soozou, Mamo Howell, Andy Mohan, Kim Taylor Reece, Leighton Lam, Amos Kotomori, Sierra Dew, Jodi Salmonson of Martinique and Melisa Medalle of Meesah.
