Weekend events kick off ‘Inspired’ contest
The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation is sponsoring the "Inspired in Hawaii" contest to get youngsters involved in social issues challenging the state.
The contest is open to Hawaii students in grades kindergarten through high school, with poster, essay and video divisions. The contest will award a total of $10,000 in cash and other prizes.
Former Govs. George Ariyoshi and Ben Cayetano will be among the guest speakers at this weekend’s three-day kickoff event at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana. The pair will appear on a "Leading Hawaii" panel from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Student journalists and Hawaii News Now reporters will interview panelists, who will be available afterward to meet the public and sign books.
Other panels are:
» "Sustainability," focusing on farms and restaurants, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with chef Kevin Chong of Chef Mavro and farmer Dean Okimoto of Nalo Farms.

» "Swinging for the Fences," on drafting a game plan for success, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, with former Major League Baseball player Benny Agbayani, University of Hawaii women’s basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias and Hawaii Pacific University women’s softball coach Bryan Nakasone.
» "Inspiring Keiki to Overcome Obstacles and Dream Big," from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday, with author and inspirational speaker Wally Amos, musician and author Henry Kapono and educator and author Shelly Mecum.
» "Pitching In to Protect Our Planet," from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, with Mitch D’Olier of Kaneohe Ranch, Evan Fujimoto of Graham Builders and Jeff Mikulina of Blue Planet Foundation.

The three-day period also is a book fair fundraiser for Sacred Hearts Academy and Saint Louis School. Patrons should mention the school of their choice at checkout.
