Disabled athlete inspires others

Kona resident Jason Lester, a physically challenged extreme athlete, will discuss his new book, "Running on Faith," at 2 p.m. next Saturday at Borders bookstore at Ala Moana Center.

"Running on Faith: The Principles, Passion, and Pursuit of a Winning Life" will be released next month by HarperOne (under HarperCollins Publishers).

Originally from Arizona, Lester was 12 when a speeding car ran a red light, breaking 21 bones and paralyzing his right arm. His book offers readers nine lessons that helped him to achieve his dreams and the tools to overcome adversity, according to Julie Burton, a HarperOne publicist. Lester also realized God’s guiding hand in his life.

He completed the 2004 Ironman World Championship in Kona, where he took up residence, and continued training even harder. He became the first disabled athlete to complete the Ultraman World Championship in 2008. In 2009 he won an ESPY Award for Best Disabled Male Athlete.

He is the founder of the Never Stop Foundation, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of children and adults through athletics. A center is scheduled to be built in Kona next year.
