HMA, ophthalmologists back Aiona
The Hawaii Medical Association and the Hawaii Ophthalmological Society have endorsed Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona for governor.
"Duke Aiona understands the need to put the public’s interest above special interests, which includes enacting meaningful tort reform that protects our doctors and hospitals," Joseph Zobian, an ophthalmologist, said in a statement yesterday.
"It is a pleasure to reaffirm our commitment to Duke Aiona and all that he stands for," said Dr. Paul DeMare, chairman of HMA’s political action committee.
Aiona is facing lawyer and former state lawmaker John Carroll in the GOP primary for governor.

USS Texas returns to Pearl Harbor
The Virginia-class submarine USS Texas returned home this week after completing its first three-month Western Pacific deployment since changing its home port to Pearl Harbor in November.
During the deployment, which ended Monday, the Texas was led by Cmdr. Bob Roncska.
The USS Hawaii, the first Virginia-class submarine assigned to Pearl Harbor, arrived here in July 2009 and finished a monthlong retrofit in April. It was followed by the USS Texas in October.
