Phone maker rings louder

BEIJING » HTC Corp., a Taiwanese maker of smart phones, is trying to establish its brand name as it competes with Apple’s iPhone. HTC supplies Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, but few Americans know its name. With the help of marketing by cellular carriers and television ads during the baseball World Series, HTC says that number is growing.

HTC’s path out of the shadows has been complicated by U.S. carriers’ preference to market its phones under their own brands.
