3 suspects captured in park fight

An 18-year-old man parked in a Hawaii Kai park with his ex-girlfriend was attacked Saturday afternoon by six or seven males, including the woman’s current boyfriend, Honolulu police said.

The attackers drove up in two vehicles about 2:20 p.m. and the woman’s current boyfriend got out and punched the ex-boyfriend in the face, police said.

As the two began to fight, the other males jumped in and overpowered the 18-year-old, police said. One of them allegedly hit the victim with a hammer, police said.

The men — and the woman — then fled in their vehicles.

The victim was taken by an ambulance to a hospital and treated and released for minor injuries.

Three male suspects — ages 21, 18 and 17 — were arrested later in Kaimuki when their vehicle was found. Because the 18-year-old discovered that his cell phone had been taken, the suspects were arrested on suspicion of robbery in the first degree, police said.

The other suspects, including the one who allegedly used the hammer, were still being sought by police yesterday.

Man allegedly points gun at officers

A convicted felon allegedly pointed a gun at a vehicle full of military police on the H-2 freeway Saturday and later was arrested on suspicion of six counts of terroristic threatening in the first degree and a variety of weapons and ammunition counts, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, Honolulu police said.

Robert K. Nunies, 27, of a Koolani Drive address, was the lone occupant of a silver vehicle that allegedly pulled up to a U.S. government vehicle carrying Army police. Nunies then allegedly pointed a deadly weapon at the police officers, Honolulu police said.

The occupants took down the license plate of the car and called 911. Honolulu police tracked down the registered owner of the silver vehicle, who directed officers to Nunies’ home.

Honolulu police arrested Nunies at home after a brief struggle.

Man dies aboard cruise ship

A 57-year-old cruise ship passenger had difficulty breathing before he died aboard a cruise ship Saturday, Honolulu police said.

The ship’s medical staff had tried to revive the man before he died just before 3 a.m. Saturday, police said. Investigators said there were no signs of foul play.

Police to meet with public in N. Kohala

The Hawaii County Police Department will hold a community meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the North Kohala Intergenerational Center at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau.

The meeting will allow the public to meet the Police Department’s command staff and to discuss concerns with the police chief and commanders who oversee police operations in the North Kohala District, police said.

The North Kohala event continues district community meetings, which are rotated monthly throughout the eight police districts on the Big Island.

Labor Day checkpoints announced

Big Island police are informing motorists that officers will conduct DUI checkpoints across the island today.

Officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit, personnel from the Traffic Services Section and the Big Island Mothers Against Drunk Driving coordinator conducted a DUI checkpoint Thursday in Hilo.

Police and MADD Program Coordinator Lisa Onorato reminded motorists about the hazards of drinking and driving and gave them literature on the subject.

In 2009, Hawaii County had three fatal traffic accidents over the Labor Day weekend, resulting in five deaths. In two of the three accidents, alcohol was a contributing factor.

This year, Hawaii County already has had 20 traffic fatalities, compared with 14 last year. More than half of this year’s traffic deaths were alcohol- or drug-related.
