Hawaii turns back St. Mary’s in volleyball

Kanani Danielson put down 20 kills to lead No. 6 Hawaii to a 25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 25-23 victory over St. Mary’s tonight in the championship match of the Verizon Wireless Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Birttany Hewitt added 11 kills and nine blocks, while Chanteal Satele added 11 kills and 10 digs for the Rainbow Wahine (8-1).

Danielson was named the Most Outstanding Player. Joining her on the all-tournament were teammates Satele and Elizabeth Ka’aihue. Also on the all-tournament team were St. Mary’s Megan York and Gabby Jolley, UC Irvine’s Kari Pestolesi and Kyle Sexton of San Diego State.

In today’s earlier match, UC Irvine outlasted San Diego State, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24, 15-12.
