A 29-year-old man who died after apparently suffering from the bends while scuba diving on Kauai was identified today by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office as Robert Lower Jr. of Honolulu.

Lower told his wife that he wasn’t feeling well and may have the bends, Honolulu police said. He went to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and then Kuakini Medical Center where he died about 11:05 p.m., police said.

Lower ran into trouble at Kakuiula Harbor about 2:45 p.m. yesterday, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

The bends, or decompression sickness, can happen when divers rise too quickly, causing nitrogen bubbles to form in the blood.
