Musical event honors teacher Masaki

For decades, Ellen Masaki held sway over Hawaii’s young pianists as the doyenne of local piano teachers, sending many students on to national competitions and conservatory studies. Since her death last year, her studio, the Masaki School of Music, has been run by her daughter, cellist Nancy Masaki.

The school has continued to thrive, with five teachers and about 300 students. The school will be holding a free open house from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow featuring piano, violin, viola, cello, voice and guitar performances.

A special tribute to Ellen Masaki will be presented at 7 p.m. Both student and professional musicians will perform. The school is located at 250 Ward Ave., Suite 226, above First Hawaiian Bank. Call 593-9395.
