Man held after break-in and assaults

A man who allegedly violated a restraining order barring him from the Salt Lake house where his mother and his sister live, and then assaulted two police officers, is being held on $100,000 bail at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

Hiram Simafranca, 33, for whom no permanent address was reported, entered the Aila Street home just before midnight Sept. 4 and ransacked it, according to a court affidavit.

A neighbor called police, who tried to arrest Simafranca, the affidavit said. But Simafranca resisted arrest, wrestling with one and then punching and biting another before fleeing on foot.

Simafranca was arrested Tuesday. He is being held pending a hearing on charges of first-degree assault of a police officer and unauthorized entry into a home.

Cause of death for infant is deferred

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has deferred the cause of death of a 2-month-old boy who died Tuesday several hours after falling onto a carpeted floor in Waipio, police said.

The boy fell asleep in his father’s arms and fell out of his father’s grasp onto the bedroom floor shortly after 11 a.m., police said.

After checking on the infant, the man placed him on the side of the bed as they took a nap, police said.

At about 2:15 p.m. the father awoke and found the boy unresponsive. Paramedics took the boy to a hospital, where he died, police said. Police have opened an unattended-death case.

Queen’s patient arrested in damage

A Queen’s Medical Center patient was arrested yesterday after allegedly causing more than $2,000 in damage at the hospital.

The 24-year-old man, of no local address, was being held at the hospital for observation and was being escorted to another part of the facility earlier this week when he became upset and broke a sliding glass door with a table leg, causing more than $1,500 in damage, police said. The following day, the patient became upset again and used a wooden desk to break a window, causing more than $500 in damage, police said.

The man was released from the hospital yesterday and arrested on suspicion of second- and third-degree criminal property damage.

Blaze burns Big Island warehouse

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that burned an agricultural warehouse and its contents Thursday night in Volcano.

Big Island firefighters responded to the blaze on Highway 11 near the 17.5 mile marker at about 7:40 p.m.

The metal warehouse was fully involved when they arrived.

Firefighters got the blaze under control at 8:16 p.m. and extinguished at 8:36 p.m.

Damage is estimated at $66,000 to the building and its contents, which included pesticides, fertilizer and fuel.
