Christensen on winning fishing team

Mid-Pacific Institute graduate Dane Christensen teamed with Alfredo Gutierrez to win the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Division on Lake Roosevelt, Ariz., on Saturday.

The Long Beach State duo landed five bass weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces, earning $10,000. The scholarship money will be split evenly between the university and the school’s bass fishing club.

Christensen (MPI ’04) is a senior majoring in construction engineering management. He and Gutierrez have qualified for the Western Division Regional Championship to be held Oct. 7-9 on Lake Folsom, Calif.

HSA surf event shortened to one day

The Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series continues this Sunday with competition at Straight Outs off Kewalo Basin Park.

The Hawaii Surfing Association meet had originally been scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday, but has been changed to a one-day event. Last week’s two-day event at Rennicks was canceled due to a permit problem.

The contest hotline is 262-2488. The website is hasasurf.org.

Tennis players shine at Jr. Masters

Led by Zandrix Acob’s breakthrough victory, Hawaii players scored big at the National Nike Junior Masters last month in Florida.

Acob, from Hilo, became the first Hawaii junior to make a Masters final. He got to the 14-under championship match against top seed Javier Restrepo, from Florida, without losing a set. Acob lost the first set against Restrepo, but won the championship 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Acob has moved to Florida to train at the USTA Center in Boca Raton. His win qualified him for the Nike International Masters in Club Med, Bahamas.

Mililani High School freshman Alyssa Tobita took sixth in the Girls 14s. After falling to the second seed in the quarterfinals, Tobita split her final two matches. Mckenna Fujitani, a Punahou seventh-grader, was 14th in Boys 12s, rallying to win a super-tiebreaker the second day after losing his first two matches. In Girls 12s, Honolulu’s Taylor Lau lost to the top seed in the first round, won in a walkover, then fell to the third seed and finished 12th.

All four qualified by winning their divisions at the USTA Nike Summer Sectional here in June. Nike paid the way for the players and section coach, Blake Mosley.
