Two-story cabin in Kokee, Kauai, is destroyed by fire

Fire destroyed a two-story cabin in Kokee, Kauai, last night, and about a quarter acre of abutting state forest was also burned by the fire.

The cabin was near Mile Marker 13 on a dirt road in an area known as Puu Ka Pele. No one was in the cabin when the fire broke out.

Damage to the cabin and its contents is estimated to be $250,000.

A cabin about 200 feet away was not affected because of calm weather and the precautions of the owner, who watered down his home and the surrounding ground.

Firefighters were able to drive only smaller trucks to the scene due to the narrowness of the road. The engines had to park at a nearby pavilion lot and were used to shuttle water from hydrants about a mile away at Kokee State Park.

Initially, the fire was reported under control at around 10 p.m. and the firefighters were on their way back to their stations when an engine and firetruck were called back to put out hot spots that flared up in the forest.

The fire was fully extinguished about midnight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
