Marines and Coast Guard practice rescue operations in Kaneohe Bay
The Marine Corps and Coast Guard practiced the rescue this afternoon of crew members from a simulated helicopter crash in north Kaneohe Bay.
A swimmer was placed in the water and a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter lowered a rescue basket to retrieve the swimmer, officials said.
A second simulated helicopter crash at sea involved a rescue by the Marine Corps bases’ waterfront operations and a retrieval using a boat.
“The mishap drill is an unannounced event that will evaluate the response procedures of units from Marine Corps Base Hawaii,” the Marine Corps said.
Officials said local residents might see the simulated downed pilot and crew, rescue helicopters and boats, smoke, flares and sea dye.
