Honolulu police will be stepping up its impaired-driver checkpoints through the holiday season in November and December, the department said today.

Checkpoints will set up over the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holiday periods, as well as unannounced days from Nov. 1 through Jan. 3.

Forty-nine people have been killed in traffic collisions on Oahu this year, three more than at this time last year. Alcohol, drugs, and/or speeding were contributing factors in at least 23 of those crashes, HPD said.
