Police say 70-year-old man murdered in Manoa
Honolulu police arrested a 59-year-old homeless man for murder in the death of a 70-year-old man in Manoa early this morning.
Police responded to a report of “suspicious circumstances” near St. Pius X Catholic Church at 1:40 a.m. and discovered an unresponsive 70-year-old victim. Efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene at 2:32 a.m., an Emergency Services Department spokesman said.
Police said they located and arrested a possible suspect for second-degree murder. David Orpin was arrested at the main police station at 2:35 a.m.
He has not been charged.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church said homeless people have been known to sleep on the church grounds at 2821 Lowrey Ave., but no problems have been reported in the past.

Nadine Nishioka, a member of the Manoa Neighborhood Board, said although there are homeless people who live in the area “they have not been a major problem.”
