Big Island police charge man with road rage-related crimes in Kailua-Kona

Big Island police charged a 41-year-old Spokane, Wash., man today with various crimes that were reported as road rage in Kailua-Kona.

Authorities charged Christopher James Roberg with first-degree robbery, kidnapping, third-degree assault, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and two counts of terroristic threatening.

Roberg is being held in lieu of $132,000 bail.

A 21-year-old Kealakekua woman told police she was driving on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona at about 10:40 p.m. Monday when a car pulled up and stopped in front of her pickup truck.

The driver got out and allegedly went to her truck and tried to remove her keys from the ignition. He then allegedly grabbed her hair and removed personal items from her truck cab, police said.

The man then allegedly put the stolen items in his car, and returned to the woman and allegedly threatened her with a knife. He then grabbed a baseball bat from her truck bed and allegedly threatened her with it.

The man fled when another vehicle approached the scene.

Police found the man at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday at Palani Road and Kuakini Highway.

The woman refused treatment from fire personnel at the scene.
