1 arrested, 2 sought in skaters’ attack

A 30-year-old North Shore man was arrested Friday in connection with the beating of six skateboarders in Sunset Beach.

Police are still searching for a 19-year-old woman and a man in his 20s who were also involved in the attack Tuesday.

Police said four men and two women — all in their 20s — were skateboarding at a skate park when the 30-year-old man began harassing them about 9 p.m.

He grabbed a 22-year-old woman’s skateboard and used it to hit a 24-year-old man’s arm and wrist, police said.

The female suspect punched the same man in the face and all three suspects beat him unconscious with the skateboards of three victims, police said.

A 28-year-old man collapsed after he was hit on the head with a skateboard and knocked unconscious when the 30-year-old man hit him with a metal pipe, police said.

The woman repeatedly punched him as he lay on the ground and she tried to take his wallet, but couldn’t. She also punched the 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man several times.

A 27-year-old man was also beaten by the suspects with skateboards and their fists.

When three victims ran into a car, the suspects threw rocks and beer bottles at the vehicle, damaging it.

The suspects took off in a black pickup with three skateboards.

Undercover officers identified the 30-year-old man yesterday and arrested him at his Mamao Street home on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Woman allegedly tries to steal tips

A 26-year-old woman was charged yesterday with trying to steal an employee’s tips from a cash jar.

Maile Eberly of 333 Keahole St. bought a cup of coffee and tried to leave the Hawaii Kai Towne Center store with cash from the tip jar about 11 a.m. Friday, police said.

A 29-year-old woman who works at the store demanded her money back and the two women struggled, police said.

Police arrested Eberly nearby at the shopping center.

She was charged yesterday with second-degree robbery and is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Swimmer rescued off eastern shore

Lifeguards rescued a swimmer yesterday off East Oahu.

A caller reported the man needing help in the water between Hanauma Bay and Lanai Lookout at 2:08 p.m., city lifeguards said.

Lifeguards on personal watercraft launched from Sandy Beach brought the man to Hanauma Bay in about 10 minutes.

Paramedics were requested to examine the man.

Firefighters get some help from weather

WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND » Light showers and overcast skies aided firefighters working to extinguish a brush fire that damaged three structures yesterday.

The fire continued to smolder within the 130-acre area that burned near the Kanehoa subdivision along Mamalahoa Highway, firefighters said.

Firefighters on the south side of the blaze were using pumps and hand lines to extinguish hot spots.

The runaway fire started along the highway about 12:30 p.m. Friday and came close to several homes on large lots, but damaged only two sheds and a 100-square-foot structure, firefighters said.

No homes were damaged and no one was injured.

The cause is under investigation.
