Takes more than luck

Glennie Adams has seen the best in both eras.

She guided tiny University High to consecutive girls volleyball state championships for seven years (1984-90). As a co-athletic director today at Kamehameha, she has seen the remarkable prowess of the Warriors.

Kamehameha won its sixth state title in a row this season.

"The level of players now is much higher. You have more experience at a younger age because of club," Adams said yesterday. "There’s a tremendous amount of skill and more specializing going on."

Yet, the coach won’t give in while comparing a fantasy matchup between the best of the Junior Rainbow teams in her era and this year’s Warriors.

"I definitely think we would’ve banged heads. We would have mixed it up," Adams said.

POY back soon

Lahainaluna point guard Maiki Viela took the state by storm last year, leading her team to its first championship.

The player of the year had a busy offseason, playing with Nike’s Team Taurasi in elite summer tournaments.

Viela has been sidelined recently by a back injury. She sat over the weekend, watching the young Lady Lunas edge Kamehameha at the Maroon and White Classic.

"She’s about 75 percent," coach Todd Rickard said.
