Real twin towers help Kansas continue streak

LAWRENCE, Kan. » Twin brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris each had double-doubles and No. 7 Kansas romped past Valparaiso 79-44 last night for the Jayhawks’ 61st consecutive home victory.

Kansas can tie its school record for consecutive wins at home on Friday against North Texas.

Marcus Morris, 1 inch shorter than his 6-foot-10 sibling, had 11 rebounds and 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting for the Jayhawks (2-0), who have launched their season with a pair of lopsided victories.

Markieff Morris, who had a double-double against Longwood in the season opener, added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Valparaiso (1-1), picked fourth in the Horizon League, had one lead — at 2-1. Cory Johnson and Kevin Van Wijk each had 10 points for the Crusaders and Brandon Wood had nine.

Tyrel Reed scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, and Mario Little added seven in a 27-10 first-half run that put the Jayhawks firmly in control.

Casting a shadow over the Jayhawks’ two lopsided season-opening wins is the uncertainty surrounding freshman point guard Josh Selby, who again sat on the bench in street clothes. The No. 1 recruit in the nation, Selby is awaiting clearance by the NCAA over amateurism issues. Kansas officials continue to say a decision is expected any time, and they believe he will get the green light.

In the meantime, Tyshawn Taylor is handling most of the point guard duties, with sophomore Elijah Johnson benched for unspecified disciplinary reasons. The 6-3 junior, who had 10 assists in a victory over Longwood last Friday, had five assists and eight points.

No. 19 Memphis 72, Miami (Fla.) 68

Joe Jackson had 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals to lift Memphis past Miami.

Malcolm Grant led the Hurricanes with 18 points.

Grant’s 3-point put Miami up 63-59 with 3:58 left before Memphis rallied. Jackson’s free throws put Memphis ahead, 71-68. Grant missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left and Antonio Barton hit a free throw to seal it.

No. 20 Georgetown 69, Tulane 53

Austin Freeman scored 23 points as No. 20 Georgetown built a big early lead then needed another run to put away Tulane in the Hoyas’ home opener.

Georgetown (2-0) opened a 32-12 lead, with Freeman scoring 13 points in the first 13 minutes, including three 3-pointers. But the Hoyas went cold soon after, and the Green Wave (1-1) used a 15-4 run to close to 36-27 with 16:22 left in the second half.

WAC/UH TOURNAMENT

Pacific 64, Nevada 53

Sam Willard had 15 points and 15 rebounds to help Pacific defeat Nevada in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Los Angeles last night.

The Tigers (2-0) advanced to today’s game against host UCLA, which beat Pepperdine 79-69 last night. The winner of the West regional earns a trip to New York for the semifinals on Nov. 24.

Demetrece Young added 14 points and Nyika Williams 10 for the Tigers, who have beaten the Wolf Pack four straight times.

Dario Hunt scored 12 points and Deonte Burton added 10 for Nevada (1-1).

New Mexico State 95, Western New Mexico 62

Troy Gillenwater led New Mexico State (2-0) with 21 points and six Aggies scored in double figures in an easy victory over the Mustangs (0-1).

Montana State 80, Cal State Fullerton 76

Bobby Howard had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Erik Rush added 17 points as Montana State (2-1) beat Cal State Fullerton in the Rainbow Classic.

Jourdain Allou’s putback off a missed free throw put Montana State up 76-71 with 36 seconds remaining. The Bobcats hit four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

The Titans (0-3) started four players 6-foot-1 and shorter.
