Wahine No. 3 in poll, 10 in RPI

Hawaii remained third in yesterday’s AVCA Coaches Top 25, behind Florida and Stanford. The Gators received 45 first-place votes and the Cardinal 12. The next three volleyball teams — UH, Cal and Nebraska — each got one first-place vote.

The Rainbow Wahine (26-1) are 10th in the NCAA’s RPI this week, with Florida, Illinois and Stanford 1-2-3.

UH takes a 21-match winning streak into its final home match, Thursday against Idaho. It is senior night, and Elizabeth Ka’aihue and Dani Mafua will be honored after the match. The first 3,000 fans will receive a team photo.

UH clinched the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title and No. 1 seed for the WAC tournament on last week’s road trip. It also set a school record for consecutive sets won, extending its streak to 56.

That dates back to Sept. 11, before the conference season began. Hawaii has won an NCAA-best 40 consecutive regular-season conference matches.

The WAC tournament opens Monday in Las Vegas. Hawaii gets a first-round bye. It plays the winner of Monday’s match between the fourth- and fifth-seeded teams in a semifinal Nov. 23. The Wahine have won the past 12 WAC championships.
