Carlisle cabinet members unanimously approved

The City Council today approved the nomination of Doug Chin as the city’s managing director along with the re-appointments of four members of the previous administration’s Cabinet.

The four holdovers from the previous administration are Director of Planning and Permitting David Tanoue, Director of Environmental Services Tim Steinberger, Director of Human Resources Noel Ono and Director of Information Technology Gordon Bruce.

All of Mayor Peter Carlisle’s nominations were approved unanimously by the Council, 8-0.

Only Tanoue’s nomination received any testimony in opposition. Opponents objected to the city’s handling of a proposed development for the Koolauloa area north of Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

Opponents criticized the lack of transparency to the process, noting that when the project was unveiled last month, members of the area’s Planning Advisory Committee said Tanoue informed them the plan was moving forward only after he had met with BYUH officials and other interested parties.

The four other Cabinet appointees served under Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Other Hannemann Cabinet members were asked to stay on as temporary appointments until Jan. 31, at which time a decision will be made on permanently filling the posts.
