OIA hoopsters go matinee

Saturday basketball games in the Oahu Interscholastic Association will be strictly daytime when the season tips off in less than three weeks.

Junior varsity games will begin at 10 a.m., followed by varsity games — at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The proposal for change was voted down by league coaches in the offseason, but passed by athletic directors by a wide margin.

The OIA regular season begins Dec. 7.

Konawaena wins tournament

After losing in the girls basketball state final to Lahainaluna last season, Konawaena has been all business in nonconference play so far.

The ‘Cats defeated Lahainaluna 68-20, ‘Iolani 60-35, Mid-Pacific 61-33 and Farrington 61-23 to capture the title at the Konawaena Winter Basketball Classic over the weekend.

The wins over MPI and Farrington were on Saturday as the Wildcats improved to 7-0.

Junior Dawnyelle Awa had 18 points and 11 assists against MPI.

Lia Galdeira, who was injured for most of last season, had 16 points and eight steals in the win over Lahainaluna.

The Lady Lunas are without the services of returning state player of the year Maiki Viela (back injury).

KS-Hawaii player signs with HPU

Kamehameha-Hawaii infielder Jayce Carvalho, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound junior, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Hawaii Pacific University.

Carvalho, who also plays basketball for the Warriors, carries a 3.0 grade-point average and plans to major in social work. His father, Dave Carvalho, is a social worker.

Carvalho will join former KSH teammate Blake Amaral at HPU.
