Ensemble holds handbell concert

Ring in the holidays with the Honolulu Handbell Ensemble’s free concert at 11 a.m. Saturday in the front lobby of the Hawaii State Library.

The ensemble comprises handbell choir directors and other musicians from Oahu churches. Anne Craig Lum is director.

The 45-minute "Ringing in the Holidays" concert will feature seasonal favorites, English handbells and chimes, and audience participation, with a free Christmas music CD awarded to those who volunteer to sing a Christmas song or ring a hand chime or handbell.

The Hawaii State Library is located at 478 S. King St.

Film project open to military keiki

The Hawaii Operation: Military Kids, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, will be having a Speak Out for Military Kids Film Project open to youths ages 11 to 14.

The two-day project gives youngsters the opportunity to be in front of and behind a camera, and share their stories about their deployment experiences.

The project will occur 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Aliamanu Middle School and 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the USS Arizona Memorial. Meeting place for both days will be at Aliamanu, Room S-2.

Holiday cat show at McCoy Pavilion

The Cat Fanciers Association will hold its "Happy Holidays" cat show Saturday at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The show will include a competition for pedigreed cats judged by four CFA judges from Japan and the mainland, and the public can help choose its favorite decorated cages. Household pets will be on display and can be scored for Hawaii regional competition purposes.

A silent auction and sale of cat toys and supplies will be held. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 to $4. Call 599-2444, ext. 2, or e-mail kcribbs@hawaii.rr.com for information.

Contest seeks images of Hawaii

Local shutterbugs with an eye for things Hawaiian can win a Canon digital camera, courtesy of the 15th Annual Canon Amateur Photo Contest, which will begin accepting entries on Wednesday.

The theme of the contest is "Portraits of Hawaii." Contest organizers said subjects are not limited to people and can include, for example, images of Diamond Head, a North Shore cottage, or kids frolicking on the beach. Only residents of Hawaii are eligible.

A panel of experts will judge photographs based on visual impact, technical skill, and keeping with this year’s theme.

Photos must be in print format with a maximum size of 5 by 8 inches. Deadline for entries is Feb. 28.

Canon is offering three prizes: the new EOS Rebel T2i, the PowerShot G12 and the PowerShot SD 1300. For more information and application forms, call Canon USA Hawaii at 522-5930.
