Saint Louis wide receiver Duke Bukoski has been invited to play in the AIGA Foundation Polynesian All-American Bowl.

The game is set for Jan. 15 at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. Bukoski led state champion Saint Louis with 50 receptions for 942 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior.

Punahou standout has options

At 6-foot-6, Malik Johnson has a good view of his future.

The junior swingman is leading the Buffanblu in scoring as the nonconference schedule heads into the thick of tournaments. After playing football as a sophomore, he began the fall away from the game, but returned midway through.

Basketball coach Darren Matsuda says there is strong interest from major college recruiters because of his measurables.

Viela back with a vengeance

Girls basketball player of the year Maiki Viela returned from a back injury last week and set Lahainaluna to a new tempo.

The Lady Lunas swept through three opponents, including a 22-point win over Hawaii Baptist and a 70-17 rout of Kamehameha-Maui, and improved to 5-4 in nonconference play.

Hot shooting for HBA, Kalani

In what may turn out to be a season high for island players, Jun Fritz sank nine 3-pointers and finished with 31 points in Hawaii Baptist’s 71-68 win over Kauai last week in a tournament at Kapaa.

Even more amazing was a 45-point performance by Kalani guard Tatsuya Ono in a 69-59 victory over Kealakehe at the St. Joseph/Waiakea Classic. If anyone was tired, it wasn’t Ono, who did it on the fourth day of the tourney.
