2 hurt as boulders crash into Aiea Heights house

Two people were injured today when a boulder crashed into their two-story house in Aiea Heights, according to police.

A man, 50, and a woman, 36, were hit in the back bedroom of the first floor of the house shortly after 5 p.m.

Their injuries were not life-threatening and they were taken to the hospital in stable condition, firefighters said. The woman complained of abdominal pain and the man had an injured leg, said neighbors who rushed to help the couple. A boy, 10, was not hurt in the incident,

Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum said it appeared two boulders crashed into the house — one about six feet in diameter, the other about three feet.

“The patients were very lucky in this case,” Lum said. “If they were maybe three to four feet in the path of the boulder either way, they would’ve gotten more serious injuries.”

The boulders created a 6-by-6-foot hole in the wall facing the ridge at 99-868 Holoai St.

Neighbors who rushed to the aid of the injured said they heard a large rumble as if there was an earthquake.

Colin Matsuzaki, who lives across the street, said the woman appeared trapped under a desk that had appeared to have collapsed on top of her. The man was injured and lying in the hallway, he said.

The ground in the back of the house appeared muddy from recent rains, witnesses said.
