Police say bicycle thief also assaulted officer

A 23-year-old man, who stole a bicycle, then lied to police about his name, assaulted an officer who was arresting him in Kapolei, police said.

Justin Kekoa, of no local address, was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree theft, and obstructing government operations. His bail is set at $11,000.

Police said a caller reported two suspicious men in Kapolei about 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Officers found one man who matched the description and stopped him. Without naming Kekoa, police said the man gave the officer bogus personal information and ran off as an officer was conducting an identity check. Officers chased after him and Kekoa struggled, then assaulted an officer, police said. Police arrested him at Kamaaha Avenue and Kekuilani Loop. Police said he also stole a bike.
