Leeward residents are being asked to continue conserving water, following the break of a 24-inch main, until reservoirs in the area can be recharged.

Crews are slowly returning water to the 24-inch main, and the request for conservation will likely last until tomorrow, said Kurt Tsue, a Board of Water Supply spokesman.

Repair crews repaired this afternoon the main that delivers 60 percent of water to residents from Honokai Hale to Makaha.

The leak was discovered near the Kahe Power Plant about midnight, and crews shut off the main until repairs could be completed. The main is off the highway and repairs did not affect traffic.

During the repairs, residents adhered to the request to conserve and there were no major water outages, Tsue said. Nine customers who didn’t have water near the leak were provided with a water wagon.

While the main was off, Board of Water Supply officials rerouted water from reservoirs that usually supply 40 percent of water to the area. After the pressure is fully restored to the main, those reservoirs will be refilled.
