State imposes year-long fishing ban near Diamond Head
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will close the shoreline in the Waikiki and Diamond Head areas to all fishing so stocks can replenish.
In an announcement Saturday, the agency said no fishing will be allowed in the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011.
A department spokeswoman says that includes individuals using only one or two fishing rods.
The management area encompasses the shoreline between the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and can extend 500 feet or more from the shore.
Anyone who violates the temporary closure could face petty misdemeanor charges and be subject to an administrative fine.
