Kailua-Kona crash victim identified
Big Island police identified a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man killed in a crash on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona Sunday night.
Brian Anthony Margate died when a 2005 Ford F-350 pickup truck towing a horse trailer crossed the center line and collided into Margate’s 2001 Volkswagen sedan, police said.
The crash happened at 7:06 p.m. at the 121 mile-marker near Nani Kailua Drive.
Margate was pronounced dead at the Kona Community Hospital at 9:50 p.m., police said.
Two 20-year-old sisters were treated and released from Kona Community Hospital with minor injuries.
Firefighters said five horses in the trailer were loose when they arrived at the scene and were rounded up by their owner and friends.

Traffic investigators opened a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Police ask that anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, extension 229.
The death marked the 27th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 22 at this time last year.
