Big Island officials rack up $222K in card charges

Top officials in the administration of Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi have spent $222,000 in purchases using county credit cards over the past 22 months.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported that Kenoi, his top management staff and department heads made almost 1,900 purchases for airfare, rental cars, hotels and food.

The newspaper submitted a public records request to the county for the data.

Kenoi was the top card user, charging more than $29,600 over the 22-month period. Office of Liquor Control Director Janice Pakele charged more than $19,800, though her card was used for Liquor Control Commission members as well.

County Managing Director Bill Takaba charged about $19,200, while police Chief Harry Kubojiri charged about $16,200.
