Heavy rains on Maui this morning caused flooding in Kihei, shut down two major roadways, and closed schools.

The main road linking Lahaiana in west Maui with the rest of the island was closed this morning because of flooding and a rockside with boulders as large as five feet in diameter.

Maui officials said Honoapiilani Highway is closed between Maalea and Launiopoko Park because of the rock side that occurred at 5:23 this morning.

State transportation department workers hope to clear the debris from the rock slide by 10 this morning. The rock side occurred in the same general vicinity where another rockslide caused problems after Monday’s rains.

The flooding on Hauoli road in Maalea was so deep that portions of the highway were considerable “structurally unsound,” according to Maui officials.

Also closed was South Kihei road cutting off portions of the island from Kihei from Wailea.

The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at the Kihei Community Center for evacuating families.

South Kihei Road also flooded during heavy rains last month.

The Department of Education closed five public schools on Maui because of the heavy rains and flooding.

Kamalii Elementary, Kihei Elementary, Lokelani Intermediate and Kula Elementary and Kihei Public Charter schools are closed today. Also closed is a private Montessori school in Pukalani.

All other public and charter schools are open as of 7:30 a.m.
