Hawaii drops volleyball season opener to Ball State
Greg Herceg had 10 kills and No. 14 Ball State swept No. 5 Hawaii 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 tonight in the second match of the 17th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.
It was the first time that the Cardinals (1-0) had beaten the Warriors (0-1) in Honolulu in eight meetings.
Sophomore opposite Jonas Umlauft had 13 kills to lead Hawaii in the 102-minute match. Junior Steven Hunt and senior Joshua Walker both had eight kills.
The Warriors were outblocked 10-5.5.
Hawaii plays No. 10 Penn State tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Nittany Lions lost to No. 8 UCLA 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 earlier tonight.
UCLA and Ball State play at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
