Farrington's J.P. Saycon soared over Kaiser last night.
He’s having his cake and eating it, too.
Lancelot "Keke" Williams powered his way to 16 points and 12 rebounds as No. 6 Farrington pulled away in the fourth quarter for a hard-earned 53-48 win over Kaiser last night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference basketball showdown.
A crowd of about 300 watched at Farrington’s Richard Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse.
"It’s always a battle with Kaiser, I don’t care what year it is," Governors coach Allan Silva said. "It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it."
Farrington improved to 7-1 in league play and dropped the Cougars to 5-3. The teams had met in an overtime thriller on Dec. 22, won by Farrington 49-48.
This time, the Governors settled things before the end of regulation. Williams, nicknamed "Keke" (the Samoan translation for cake) because of his affinity for Oreo Cookie ice cream cake, was unstoppable on the low post. The problem for the Govs, though, was that they often coughed the ball up before Keke could go to work.
"Coach had to call timeouts and tell us to relax, have patience and create offense with what the defense is giving us," Williams said.
Ryan Reyes finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, sparking a pivotal fourth-quarter run.
"Ryan is the No. 1 defensive player on our team," Williams added.
Farrington (15-4 overall) had 20 turnovers after just three quarters and was in a 37-all battle before Reyes, a 6-foot-2 guard, took command defensively. The senior scored on a putback, drove for a layup and turned a midcourt steal into another deuce as the Govs soared to a 43-37 lead.
They spread out into a version of a four-corner offense, but failed to retreat defensively after mistakes. Cruz Kalaugher got inside for a bucket and Preston Wuich drove hard for another layup on a fast break as the Cougars got within 43-42 with 2:58 left.
Jeffrey Madarang scored his first basket on a drive to the hoop, but Paul Solomon missed the front of a 1-and-1 with 2:04 remaining. From there, Kaiser’s free-throw shooting went downhill. The Cougars shot 3-for-10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, derailing any possibility of a comeback.
Chadey Callazo hit two foul shots and Williams added another with 1:17 left to give the Govs a 48-43 lead.
J.P. Saycon (10 points) missed a dunk on a breakaway, but the ball jammed between the rim and backboard for a jump ball. The Govs got the ball back and Saycon fed Viane Vaina for a layup on the inbounds play for a 50-43 lead with 51 seconds left, sealing the win.
The Cougars managed to get within 50-47 on a baseline jumper by Royce Kuromoto with 31 seconds to play, but got no closer. Farrington did just enough at the foul line in the fourth stanza (5-for-10) to pull out a key win.
Farrington shot 53 percent from the field (20-for-38) and outrebounded Kaiser 28-16.
Bret Kanoa, Doug Gehring and Wuich led Kaiser (9-7 overall) with nine points apiece.
"The kids gave their all, but it came down to miscues. Those missed free throws, that’s what hurt us," Cougars coach Ivan Tamura said.
