‘Iolani wins on desperate shot
'Iolani's Jourdain Simmons eluded DeForest Buckner of Punahou on his way to the basket last night.
After 13 misses, Josiah Sukumaran finally got a little lucky.
A little luck, that is, with plenty of skill. The 6-foot-3 senior sank a turnaround 28-foot 3-pointer as time expired to lift No. 2 ‘Iolani over No. 4 Punahou 45-42 yesterday afternoon before a stunned crowd of about 1,000 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
There was just 1.1 seconds on the clock when the visiting Raiders inbounded the ball. Sukumaran had no choice but to let the ball fly, but his form was flawless. The shot was true, all net from 8 feet beyond the 3-point arc — over 6-foot-6 defender Malik Johnson.
"I just had to throw it up. Trevyn (Tulonghari) tried to get open. They did a good job defending him because they know he’s a shooter," said Sukumaran, who was involved in a last-second, game-deciding play in a win over Kamehameha three weeks ago. "I guess they didn’t think I could shoot it. I just shot it as quick as I can. It felt good. I was surprised."
‘Iolani (14-4) improved to 6-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
"It’s a great win. The ILH has so many great teams, such a great race," Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said. "It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t how we drew it up, but we’ll take it. We were planning for overtime. He’s been hitting 3s in practice, but I couldn’t imagine that. I’ll take it."
Reid Saito led ‘Iolani with 14 points. Gabriel Vega and Sukumaran scored 10 points each.
Punahou (20-5), with 12 points from sophomore guard Nicholas Velasquez, fell to 7-2 in the league. DeForest Buckner added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Johnson added six boards despite injuring his left ankle late in the first quarter.
"It’s a tough one, a tough one. We worked really hard, worked our butts off," Buffanblu coach Darren Matsuda said. "Malik was in his face. It was a good shot. You’ve got to give him the credit."
The lead changed hands five times in a lethargic first half, but Punahou’s fast break came to life in the third quarter. Velasquez scored 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to give the Buffanblu a 32-26 lead.
The Raiders responded, however, with 11 second-half points by Saito.
Using a mix of man and 1-2-2 zone defenses, Punahou held on to its lead for most of the fourth quarter. ‘Iolani was down 40-39 with 2:02 left when six Raiders took the floor after a timeout. One of them, Adam Ching, quietly jogged off the court via the baseline and made his way back to the bench after the ball was inbounded. Officials did not blow a whistle, let alone assess a technical foul.
On that possession, Sukumaran ended a shooting slump by driving through the paint for a left-handed layup, giving ‘Iolani a 41-40 lead with 1:22 left.
Punahou guard Lowell Tong responded with a baseline jumper and the Buffablu led 42-41 with 51 seconds left.
Saito hit the second of two foul shots with 15.8 seconds remaining to tie the score at 42-all.
Punahou’s last possession ended with a turnover. Lowell Tong’s lob to Johnson was deflected by forward Keahi Hogan, and the Raiders called timeout with 2 seconds left.
With five team fouls, Punahou had a foul to give and hacked Sukumaran on an inbounds pass at midcourt, stopping the clock with 1.1 seconds to go, setting up the game-winning shot.
Punahou shot 51 percent from the field (18-for-35), but committed 14 turnovers, including 10 before halftime.
"That hurt us, the errors. I’ve got to give them credit. They’ve got some of the best on-ball pressure and that forced us into turnovers that we’ve got to clean up to win this kind of game," Matsuda said. "Reid hit two really big 3s. They’re a veteran team and they made the bigger shots."
‘Iolani shot 35 percent (18-for-51) and was just 4-for-9 from the foul line, but committed just three turnovers and outrebounded Punahou in the second half 12-9.
"They played a great game. It was really tough," Sukumaran said. "This is how every ‘Iolani-Punahou game should be."
Punahou’s next game will be against AOP (4-1 ILH) at Le Jardin’s Charles B. Wang Gymnasium on Wednesday. The game had originally been scheduled at Damien’s gym.
‘Iolani will visit Maryknoll on Wednesday.
