A state judge on the Big Island today sentenced a Mountain View man to 10 years in prison for second-degree methamphetamine trafficking and first-degree burglary.

Joshua Shane Soares, 22, must serve at least three years and four months before he will be eligible for parole, the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

Circuit Judge Glenn S. Hara imposed the sentence.

Police stopped Soares on April 5, 2010 after seeing him driving with his 1-year-old son not properly restrained in a car safety seat, the prosecutor said.

During the traffic stop, a drug-sniffing police dog detected narcotics. Officers found 1.08 grams of methamphetamine, empty packets and a digital scale in the vehicle, the prosecutor said.

Soares was on probation for first-degree burglary at the time, resulting in the burglary sentence.
