Rainbow Wahine’s road woes remain

The Hawaii women’s basketball team’s winless ways in the Western Athletic Conference continued last night in a 53-43 loss at San Jose State.

An abysmal effort offensively kept the Rainbow Wahine (6-12, 0-5 WAC) in last place in the league, and sealed their sixth straight loss overall and 15th straight defeat in WAC road games.

UH put up just 11 points in a miserable first half on 14.3 percent shooting from the field, and managed a season low in points overall on 28.3 percent.

SJSU (2-16, 2-3) shot just 27.5 percent but made up for it with a 22-for-24 effort on free throws. UH, meanwhile, converted just 14 of 24 at the line.

Wahine freshman forward Kamilah Jackson, the second-leading rebounder in the country, grabbed 13 boards to go with nine points. Junior forward Breanna Arbuckle and freshman wing Shawna Kuehu had 11 points each to lead UH in scoring. But UH’s second-leading scorer for the season, senior guard Keisha Kanekoa, put in just two points on 0-for-5 shooting.

The Wahine had seven assists against 16 turnovers, and forced 10 giveaways on the Spartans, who were winless until this week.

Guard AJ Newton led SJSU with 15 points.

UH will try to break its streaks tomorrow at Fresno State, where the Wahine suffered their worst WAC loss in program history last season. Should UH lose there again, they’ll match their worst start in WAC play at 0-6.

The Wahine conclude a string of five straight road games on Thursday at Utah State.
