Senate panel to consider BOE elections legislation

A state Senate committee is set to consider legislation that would grant the governor authority to appoint members of the state Board of Education.

The Committee on Education will meet Monday at 1:15 p.m. in the state Capitol to review and possibly vote on SB 8 by Sen. Jill Tokuda, Democrat of Kaneohe and Kailua.

The proposal would allow Gov. Neil Abercrombie to nominate 11 voting members to the board — six representing the entire state, one each from Hawaii’s four major islands, and one high school student. It is co-sponsored by 19 other senators.

The governor’s appointees would be subject to Senate confirmation.

Of the current 14-member BOE, 13 are elected and can vote. The 14th is a non-voting student member.
